# Custom hotkey or keyboard shortcut not working

> Fix a custom hotkey or keyboard shortcut that does nothing in TALtech software by picking a key other programs don't use.

If the hotkey or keyboard shortcut you’ve defined in your software settings isn’t working, try changing it to one that isn’t commonly used by other applications, such as a function key.

The reverse single quote key (\`\`\`\`\`) is typically available, as are function keys F7, F8, F9, and above. On some computers such as laptops, you may need to hold down the “`Fn`” key before pressing a function key.
