# BC-Wedge overview and basic setup

> BC-Wedge is TALtech’s entry-level software for sending data from RS232 barcode scanners, simple scales, and calipers into any Windows application as keystrokes.

BC-Wedge is an entry-level, streamlined data collection utility specifically designed to work with simple RS232 devices like barcode scanners, basic scales, and calipers.

If you don't need the advanced parsing, filtering, or DDE capabilities of WinWedge, BC-Wedge is the perfect lightweight alternative.

### Key capabilities

* **Simple Keystroke Output:** BC-Wedge takes data received on a serial port and passes it directly to Windows as standard keystrokes.
* **100% Background Operation:** Runs silently in the system tray, passing data to whatever application currently has cursor focus.
* **Zero-Friction Setup:** Extremely simple to configure; just select your COM port, match your device's baud rate, and you're ready to scan.
