# About Interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes

> Learn what Interleaved 2 of 5 numeric barcodes are, why they need an even number of digits, and how scanners read them reliably.

Interleaved 2 of 5 (I 2 of 5) is a high density, variable length, and numeric-only barcode type that encodes digit pairs in an interleaved manner. The odd-position digits are encoded in the bars, and the even-position digits are encoded in the spaces. As a result, I 2 of 5 barcodes must consist of an even number of digits. To prevent partial scans of I 2 of 5 barcodes from being decoded as a valid (but shorter) barcode, barcode readers are typically set to read a fixed (even) number of digits when reading I 2 of 5 symbols. The number of digits is typically pre-defined for a particular application, and all readers used in the application are programmed to accept only I 2 of 5 barcodes of the chosen length. If the data is shorter than the required length, it can be left-padded with zeros to fit the proper length.

For special situations where data security is important, I 2 of 5 optionally allows for a weighted modulo 10 check character to be included.
