# About Discrete 2 of 5 barcodes

> Learn what Discrete 2 of 5 numeric barcodes are, how they differ from Interleaved 2 of 5, and why few scanners still read them.

Discrete 2 of 5 is a variable length, numeric-only symbology that is very similar to [Interleaved 2 of 5](https://support.taltech.com/b-coder/about-interleaved-2-of-5-barcodes.md), with one key difference: instead of encoding data in both the bars and the spaces, data is only encoded in the bars. As a result, Discrete 2 of 5 is not as compact as Interleaved 2 of 5, and odd numbers of digits may be encoded. However, it is worth noting that Discrete 2 of 5 is not commonly used, and only a few barcode readers support this symbology.
